Dental Implants for Tooth Replacement

Dental implants are small, medical-grade titanium posts used to help replace missing teeth or secure a loose, wobbly denture. Implants are used for the replacement of a tooth root or multiple roots. They are professionally secured into the jawbone at our Lawrence, KS dentist office by implant specialist Dr. Paul Herrera DDS. After properly implanted, the titanium screw of the implant becomes invisible below the gumline.

What Are Dental Implants Made Of?

The materials used in implant dentistry generally include lightweight titanium alloys, with titanium being a very commonly used metal for dental implants and other bone replacement procedures. Titanium is very strong and biocompatible, resulting in implants that can last a lifetime. Titanium works so well for implants due to its bone fusing properties, also known as osseiointegration. This property allows implants to restore lossed bone stabilization that occurs when a tooth is removed or missing. The success rate of a dental implant procedure is higher that most other surgically implanted procedures.

Single or Multiple Tooth Implants?

Dental Implants can be used for the replacing of one or several teeth. A wonderful benefit of replacing missing teeth with implants is that this new implanted tooth will never risk getting a cavity! If all of your teeth are missing in either the upper arch or lower arch of your mouth, at least 4 to 8 implants will be required to properly restore your bite and smile.

Do Dental Implants Last Long?

Dental implants are one of the most reliable medical procedures, and have continued to be extremely reliable since their widespread acceptance in the 1980s. They are also far longer lasting than other cosmetic dental services such as veneers. The 10 year success rate for dental implants range from 85% to 98% depending on location and patient factors. The majority of implanted teeth still function after over 20 years of use and with proper oral hygiene care. The titanium material used in most implants is also extremely reliable and usually able to last a lifetime. Enjoy life without worrying about the quality of your new teeth!

How Long Does an Implant Procedure Take?

It usually take 60 to 90 minutes to place 4 to 6 implants, which is enough implants to support a complete denture is necessary. The entire long-term process can last in the range of six to eight months, and possibly requiring 2 surgicial procedures, although advancements in implant surgery may allow one visit to extract and place implants. One implant procedure being an initial installation of the tooth implant, with use of local or general anesthesia if necessary or requested by the patient. The second procedural phase begins after the implant is successfully rooted or bonded to the bone. A small support post is then inserted, acting as an artificial tooth anchor, where the artificial crown or tooth is then applied on top during a short dental appointment.

Is Implant Dentistry Painful?

The short answer is no. Patients are numbed through the use of general or local anesthesia when the implants are placed. Post implant placement, patients may require only moderate pain relievers like ibuprofen and Tylenol for any small, lingering pain.

Are You a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?
